HMS Diamond got the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations off to a noisy and spectacular start as she entered Portsmouth harbour today.
The Type 45 destroyer, escorted by HMS Raider and HMS Blazer, fired a spectacular 21-gun salute in honour of Her Majesty.
This was responded to by a 21-gun salute fired by the naval gun at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport.
The crew also gave three cheers to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The stunning start to the long weekend of celebrations also included a flypast by a Tornado jet and an escort by two Lynx and two Merlin helicopters – in a diamond formation of course.!
The spectacle was witnessed by flag waving crowds at vantage points including the Round Tower and Walls in Old Portsmouth and the Millennium Pier and waterfront in Gosport.
Once the ship berthed in the naval base the celebrations took on a more relaxed fashion with a street party for the 190 crew and guests on the ship’s flight deck.
