Vessel Tracking Coverage

The marine traffic data used by Ship Finder is collected via ground based AIS receiving stations located all over the world.

We work very hard to continually increase our global coverage and it is improving all of the time.

If you are in a location that does not have any data, or if you think that you can improve the current coverage (such as from a location near a major port) we may be able to supply a free AIS receiver and setup. There are a few technical requirements that need to be met but you don’t have to know anything about the technology in advance to do this. Please contact us at to discuss in more detail.

AIS Data Sharing

We understand that a lot of time and effort goes into running a full or part time AIS data feed and very much appreciate any data that is shared with us. If you share data please make sure you ask us for free apps. We would also be delighted to hear from you if you ever need help in any way and will try our very best to help out.

If you have an AIS receiver of any type and want to see your data in Ship Finder, please see the simple instructions below and let us know that you’ve set it up. Alternatively contact us at and we’ll respond straight away.

Our preferred method is to connect using COAA’s Ship Plotter software.
We suggest you use the free trial first to make sure you are happy with the results.
We have been working with COAA and the latest versions simplify the sharing process. Please contact us if you don’t wish to purchase the software yourself.
Once it’s set up go to goto Options–>Sharing–>Setup and fill in as per the image below.

ShipFinder settings for AIS data sharing

Then just let us know you’ve done it so that we can set up the new feed within Ship Finder.
Please note that we do not use the data shared via the internet sharing facility built into Ship Plotter software as this is against the terms of the license agreement and also would not be fair on those sharing the data just for use within the Ship Plotter community.

Directly Send AIS Data

We can also receive your AIS data direct by sending it to us over TCP/IP.
AIS data needs to be sent to 4001 (UDP or TCP). (IP Address is

It’s not essential but we’d appreciate it if you tell us too so that we know whose data we are using.
