HMS York returns to Portsmouth for the final time

The Royal Navy destroyer HMS York returned to Portsmouth  for the final time this afternoon.

The warship sounded a 17 gun salute which was returned by the Fort Blockhouse gun at Gosport.

The Type 42 destroyer (D98) has arrived in readiness for decommissioning in the city next week.

The Royal Navy are replacing the Type 42 fleet with a new fleet of technically advanced Type 45 destroyers.

HMS York was launched on 20 June 1982 at Wallsend, Tyne and Wear. Since then her long service has seen her cover over 750,000 miles

The vessel was greeted from the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth and the Millennium Pier in Gosport by friends and family of the ship’s crew.
