ID Integrity adrift near Australian Great Barrier Reef

A cargo ship is drifting out of control after an engine failure close to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

The are fears of serious damage to the precious marine environment if the ship runs aground.

ID Integrity, a Hong Kong registered bulk carrier, broke down north of Cairns on Friday night.

Emergency tugs, including the specialist tug Pacific Responder, have been sent to rescue the 26,000 tonne vessel.

The crew are also reported to be working to restart the ships engines in the battle to keep the ship from the ecologically important Shark and Vema reefs.
